Food Safety

There is more to worry about in the kitchen besides sharp knives--about 71 million Americans get sick from food each year (even though most foodborne illnesses can be prevented). Choose a class, and learn more about food safety!

Preparing Safe Food- What are foodborne illnesses, and how can I prevent them? This class covers the basics of foodborne illnesses and how to prevent them through safe food handling methods. The class can be geared for all age and ability groups. Class time ranges from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Washington State Food and Beverage Handler's Class- This class covers the information required to receive the Washington State Food Handler's Card (which is required for handling food for the public). The class is designed for teens and adults interested in food service. Class time includes a 1 hour slide/information presentation and a 30 minute test. There is an $8.00 charge for each food handler's card.

Seasonal Food Safety Issues- This class provides information to minimize the risk of causing or contracting a foodborne illness during a barbecue, picnic, potluck, party, buffet, or other event. The class is designed for adults with an interest in food safety. Class time is 1 hour.

Emerging foodborne illnesses/ Current topics- This class provides information about new risks with food and explanations of food safety issues in the news. The class is designed for adults with basic food safety experience. Class time ranges from 1-2 hours.
