1st Steps Program
The First Steps Program began in August 1989.
It provides outreach, maternity care and health care
to low income women, infants, and children.
Maternity Support Services/Maternity Case Manangement
are preventive health services designed to supplement medical
visits and include: Assessment, education, intervention,
and counseling provided by an interdisciplinary team.
The intent of the program is to provide interventions as
early in pregnancy as possible in an effort to promote
positive birth and parenting outcomes.
Our 1st Steps programs
offer you a team of health professionals
to help you have a healthy pregnancy.
These team members are:
Public Health Nurse
Nutritionist
Social Worker/Counselor
Community Health Worker

What can the MSS/MCM Team do for you?
Help you obtain financial assistance for medical care
Help you obtain medical care
Home visits by a Public Health Nurse
Provides child care and transportation for maternity appointments
Provide information and education for a healthy pregnancy.
Lactation specialist to help you with breastfeeding concerns.
Help you find other services you might need such as childbirth classes,
housing, education, employment assistance and drug and alcohol counseling.
How do you apply?
- Tell the WIC staff you want to apply.
- Tell your DSHS worker you want to apply.
