A communicable disease is an illness that can be transmitted from one person to another, from animal to person, from person to animal, or from contaminated surfaces to people. These diseases are caused by organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Local health departments investigate reportable diseases, notifiable conditions as well as monitor the diseases and trends in the community. (Learn more about each disease on the left-hand side.)
