Hand, Foot, and Mouth is caused by viruses from the Enterovirus genus group. This viral illness usually affects infants and children under the age of 5. But can also occur in children over 5, and adults. Hand, foot, and mouth disease usually begins with symptoms such as a fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, and a feeling of being unwell. A couple of days after these symptoms begin, painful sores may develop in the mouth. A skin rash may also begin to appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and less commonly on the knees, elbows, buttocks, or genital area. Right now there is no vaccine or treatment for hand, foot, and mouth disease. Washing your hands often, and avoiding close contact with individuals who have hand, foot, and mouth disease can decrease your risk of infection.
